QuestionI found that the property that we just bought has a field of nothing but Passion Flowers. Is there a market for these plants. and how can I benefit from these lovely plants.
AnswerFrank:
There are a few varieties of passionflowers. The 1 that I know more about is the "passion flower,Incarnata". It produces a lemon size fruit on it called "maypop". That is from stepping on them, they will give a popping sound. In Georgia they have a maypop festival every year. They make jams, jellies, milk shakes. The fruit have pomegrante seeds that are purple, sweet & tart. The leaves have the scent of spanish peanuts. It has been used for calming the nerves, but check with herbalist for amount to use. The flowers are said to represent Jesus Christ on the cross. The come back every year and will root under concrete. Plants can be dug up in the spring and potted up for sale. I have always wanted to sell them to Churches for their gardens. Good luck.
