Dying Rosemary

Question
I bought a rosemary plant from my local Lowes 3 weeks ago.  The day after I bought it I transplanted it to my yard.  I followed all the instructions for planting it correctly (enough space, depth, etc.).  It started turning brown within a week and just keeps getting worse - the brown starts at the bottom so that the tips are still green, but starting to turn yellow.  I've tried watering it a little all the way to watering it a lot but nothing is working.  I really like rosemary but this is not the 1st plant I've tortured (the others were in pots and I didn't try planting them and they died the same way) and I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.  Please help.

Kate:
It may have been root bound. If you don't spread the roots at the bottom, they will become bounded & choke themselves. Never over water it. It needs water once a week, none if it rain.It was fed chemical fertilizer, so it was being stress by not receiving it. I like organic. It is absorbed slowly and will not burn. Usually if it has turned brown, it is going to die. I suggest to return it and start again. Good drainage, face east and prune 1/3 from the top down on each branch every 3 weeks.
Use the good potting soil, not the cheap stuff.
