Lavender

Question
I am attempting to plant lavender seed in peat pellets. I planted about 25 of them on the 25th of January. Only 2 germinated.

I left them in my basement where the temperature has remained around 65 degrees. If that too cold for them to germinate?

Also, does lavender need light to germinate, or is it preferred to cover them?

Any other advice?

I had great success with basil and other herbs and some flowers starting them in flats about this time last year.

It seems that I may have jumped the gun this time with Italian parsley as it is growing like crazy, and may get too large before I can transplant them outside.

Answer
Terry:
The lavender seeds have a very low germination rate. They do need bottom heat around 70 degrees and light. Lightly cover and spray with water evey 3 days. Let them become wet, but not soggy. Transplant your parsley in 4" pots and fertilize with organic fertilizer every 3 weeks until ready to plant. The night temp should be at least 50 with no wind chills. You may cover with plastic milk jug with bottom cut out and take off during the day.
