QuestionI'm a novice when it comes to growing herbs. I have a strawberry pot with rosemary growing in the centre, and around the sides: oregano, mint, sage and parsley. the rosemary thrives, the oregano, mint and sage have died off, the parsley looks very sad and sick. I feed them every now and then. The mint seems to be growing back. I do not expect a revival from the oregano and sage. What should I do and how can I keep them growing and healthy. Also growing (in seperate containers)chives, sorrel, parsley and bay. How do I keep these over winter months?
AnswerMaeve:
The rosemary may last thru out the season if it does not get too much water and egts full, morning sun and feed every 3 weeks with a liquid fish fertilizer. Can be purchased from home depot. It also must be pruned every 3 weeks. Prune 1/3 off every branch with new growth. Winters will have to be mild for it to last unless the variety is called "Arp or"hardy Hill". which can stand -10 below zero. Oregano, mint, sage should return next year if you can revive them. Chives will return next year. Cut them back to 2" from the bottom and into 2" pieces and place on freezer paper and freeze. Do not wash. When frozen, place in zip lock bag and re-freeze for soups. Leave them outdoors all winter .snow & ice. Sorrel will die. Parsley can go thru the fall and sometimes stand a mild winter. but must be replanted next year. Bay must be protected from the winter. Do not allow it to freeze. Unless you are in mild winter states, it can stay outdoors. Otherwise indoors in a southern or eastern location. Do not over water or let roots sit in soggy water. No fertilizer in winter. Don't let it get too root bound. Re-plant to the next size pot. Take it out of pot and see if roots are knotted tightly. If so, cut them loose gently and move to the next size pot.
