QuestionMy cats love lemon grass before it gets tough and sharp-edged, and I like to use it in cooking after it matures. It is too expensive to keep buying 2-inch pots of it. I live in the Texas HIll Country, and would like to grow it, either in pots or in the ground. Feasible? How? Also, is it deer resistant?
AnswerHi Ruth,
I grow lemongrass in the ground. I'm in zone 8a. If you are in zone 7 or warmer it would overwinter easily.
In our grocery stores here u can often purchase lemon grass with the root still attached. Now would be a good time to plant directly in the ground. The mature plant will get 3 feet tall and will spread out a little at the base. It's a grass after all but stays in one clump that gets larger over time. To harvest split a bit off the plant or chop the green leaves as needed. It's time now for me to harvest the leaves for our winter tea so thanks for the question. You reminded me to check on it. It does go dormant over the winter but comes back in early spring.
Finally.....deer resistant I haven't a clue. Suggest you plant some in the ground and some in a pot just in case.
I hope I've answered your question
