Herb pruning

Question
I am growing herbs for the first time, in the garden:  parsley, sage, oregano, thyme, chives.
Re the chives: should I prune by cutting everything off almost to the base?
Re basil:  How much do I prune it back at a time?
It's been in the ground a little over a month and I just pruned it back down to the next set of leaves.
Re the oregano:  How much should I prune that back each time?
Re the thyme:  ditto.
I had the chives, oregano and sage planted in a 10-inch pot, then I found the sage grows to 30 inches high and 2 feet across!  It has been moved.  The chives and oregano and still in the same pot - should they be replanted?
Is everything I planted a perennial in Zone 7?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Dora:
Give all plants separate containers. Prune basil at least every 3 weeks, needed or not. Take only 1/3 of the new growth on each stem. Basil will re-produce quickly. Feed all plants with a liquid fish fertilizer every 3 weeks. Oregano must also be pruned by 1/3. Thyme needs goood drainage, Mix some sand or small gravel in soil. Place around the base of the plant also. Flowers on chives are edible and prune by 1/3 also. Every body should receive morning sun from the east and evening shade from the west.

As long as night temps are above 60 degrees, it is ok to plant. Basil must not have cool nights. Cut flowers off at 2pair of leaves below the flowers.
