QuestionHello,
We are going to start a small herb garden that we will plant in flower boxes. We'll probably buy small herb plants (instead of starting with seeds). Can you suggest some herbs to grow and the best way to transfer them to a window box (i.e. how deep to plant, what kind of soil to use, sunlight/water requirements, etc.).
Thanks! Sorry for such a broad question.
AnswerBrian:
Window box should be 8-12 inches deep. Receiving morning sun first and afterboon shade. Prune 1/3 off the bottom of plant and loosen the sides of the root ball slightly. Plant same depth as in the pot. Use sterile potting soil, not the miracle grow mix. Feed with organic fertilizer such as fish emulsion every 3 weeks. Water once a week. Fry library for this book: Growing herbs from seed, cutting & root, by Thomas BeBaggio. Space all herbs 12" apart. Plant no mint in this box. Rosemary must not be watered weekly, mist it weekly instead. Thyme, oregano, parsley, cilantro, lemon verbena, marjoram, sweet basil, rosemary. Space and fresh air is very important. Prune 1/3 off the new growth every 3 weeks or as needed, but prune to stimulate new growth and keep a healthy plant.
