Coral cactus

Question

Coral cactus
I just purchased a coral cactus, and I noticed it has a large brown dry patch on one of the leaves.  What could it be, and should I cut that brown spot out?  If I cut it out, will it heal it's self, or is there something special I have to do to it?  I also notice some brown on the veins , what do I do?
Please advise.

Answer
Hi Noreen,

I'm not seeing the brown patch that you referred to, so I assume it is not unusually large. If it is hard and dry, it is simply a blemish and does not need to be treated or removed. If it is soft and mushy, then it is  a problem that is likely caused by not allowing the roots to dry out properly.

Root rot can occur when pebbles on top keep air from penetrating deep into the soil and prevent you from properly monitoring soil moisture. Pots without drain holes are another source of root rot.

But you indicated the brown patch was dry, so I think you can safely ignore it.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
