QuestionI placed a clear plastic laundry bag over my kalanchoe plant last winter for 3 months while the temperature in my house was set at 45 degrees, when I came back the plant was leggy, very green, and two stems produced flowers, which are still blooming.
After the blooms die do I just cut the flowering heads off or reduce the stems to a shorter point? And at that time do I cut back the other leggy stems?
Any advice would be appreciated.
AnswerHi Gail,
I'm not sure why you put your Kalanchoe in plastic for 3 months last winter. Was that because you were away and not able to water it? In any case, the cooler temps and reduced watering no doubt helped set flower buds.
Your plant is very leggy, so ANY stem that no longer has flowers or buds should be cut back substantially. New growth will emerge just below the point where you make the pruning cuts, so let that be your guide as to how far back to prune.
I have written detailed articles on pruning that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
