QuestionHi! Hope to find you well. I purchased a beautiful fiddle leaf focus today and have a few questions. First I would like to repot in a more pleasing pot should I keep the size the same or go slightly larger and second I live in Florida does the heat have any effect on the plant as long as I keep it shielded from the sun? Thank you for the advise! I am looking forward to this plant!!
AnswerHi Bobi,
It is never a good idea to repot or disturb the roots of a newly acquired plant that is trying to adapt to its new environment. The solution to your "ugly pot" problem is to use a more attractive planter of your choice that is large enough to accommodate the ugly pot. Just set it right inside and cover over the top with Spanish moss to disguise it even further. Mission accomplished without disturbing the roots at all!
One note of caution: when you water be sure that no water collects in the bottom of the pot.
Your Ficus lyrata has probably been adapted in the nursery for use indoors close to a sunny window. Outdoor sun is much more intense, so if you keep it outside be sure it is in shade at all times. Temperatures should be below 85 degrees at all times, if there is a breeze and below 80 degrees if there is not.
I have written detailed articles on repotting and on Ficus lyrata care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at
[email protected]. I have also written an indoor plant care book in a PDF format that I can sell you if you contact me at my email address.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
