QuestionWhat is the difference between a v shaped notch vs. a band on the stem?
AnswerHi Susan,
You haven't provided much context here, but I assume you are referring to a propagation technique known as air layering.
In order to trigger the formation of roots mid-stem, it is necessary to remove the outer layer of bark and expose the stem tissue underneath and keep it in contact with damp sphagnum moss. With "banding," you remove the layer of bark all around a one-inch section of a stem. As an alternative, you can cut a sideways V-shaped notch on one side of the stem. The notch should only be about one-quarter of the way deep into the stem. A third alternative is to make a 45 degree angled cut into the stem and then placing a wood match stick into the cut to keep it open.
If I have misunderstood your question, please clarify for me. If you want additional information on air-layering, I have written an article on propagation that explains it in detail. I will email the article for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
