Leaves Have Fallen Off Aloe Vera Plant

Question
Hello.

I live in Colorado. I have an Aloe Barbadensis Miller plant. I kept the plant indoors in front of a window facing east. The soil I use is a mixture of gravel and garden soil; I also used small rocks to support the leaves, so they wouldn't break off.

This morning, all the leaves fell off, the base of the leaves have turned to mush and the roots have turned brown/ black. The leaves however, look very healthy and vibrantly green. I watered the plant once a week, since it's getting colder in Colorado.

If the roots have died, can I still use the leaves to grow a new Aloe plant?

Watering once a week can cause many problems, ...
Most plants die from improper watering techniques...Depending on plant types, sunlight exposure and pot size plants will need water at many different rates (1-2 times a day to once a month or more)...

Succulents usually die from too frequent watering (or letting stay dry too long). In this case aloe plants can die easily if kept too wet and not allowed to dry enough between waterings...You want to make sure they go dry between waterings...They do rot out easily if kept too wet. Water your plant based on how much it weighs when thoroughly watered VS when they are ready to be watered again...Pick the pot up and feel how heavy it is after watering it...Don't water it again until it feels considerably lighter and the top of the soil is light in color. Do water in the early AM on sunny days...Be especially careful when watering aloe plants during the shorter day-lite hours of winter...Err on the dry side side with these plants...Do keep them warm and avoid cold drafts...
Direct morning sunlight (especially up till Noon) is good for most plants. Succulents love light...A lot of succulents will not tolerate direct sun all day...They just need a bright location...
You can try and put the green leaves into new pots to see if they will root...Otherwise it sounds like your plant is going to die...Do change your watering technique for better results with all your plants...

Hope this helps...Let me know what you think...
