Question
Dancing Dolphin?
I bought a dancing dolphin plant from michigan bulb co. about three years ago, it looks great and I get tons of compliments on it. What I am concerned about is that it blooms but the bloom doesn't open to make it look like a dolphin. They just are sort of rounded. Do you think they sent me the wrong plant? Thank you!
AnswerHi Terry,
Your plant is a type of Columnea hybrid. 'Dancing Dolphin' is a made-up name used mostly for marketing purposes. There are dozens of Columnea hybrids on the market each with slightly different shaped flowers and in varying shades of read, orange and purple. All of them require the same basic care.
The Michigan Bulb Co. does not identify their 'Dancing Dolphin' by actual hybrid name. However, if you feel yours does not match the photo they provided, then you have a legitimate claim to get your money back or to have them send you a Columnea that matches the one that they advertise.
