Dendrobium orchid

Question
Hello Will,

I recently purchased a dendrobium orchid planted in a 3" clear plastic liner with drainage holes, double potted in a same size ceramic pot without drainage holes. I'd appreciate if you would advise how to best care for this plant.

Regards,
Marilyn

Answer
Hi Marilyn,

Once per week, take the plastic liner with drainage holes out of the ceramic pot and in the kitchen sink flush lots of clear water through the potting mix. Let it drain for a few minutes and then return it to its ceramic pot. Once per month pour a dilute mix of Orchid plant food through the soil after you have watered.

Keep your Dendrobium in an east facing window where it will get direct morning sun and bright indirect sun the rest of the day. Use a pebble tray to increase the humidity level. If possible, provide a night-time temperature that is a but 10 degrees cooler than during the day.

Every 2-3 years, the potting mix will start to break down and need to be replaced. Gently remove the old mix and replace it with a similar type of Orchid potting mix. Cut off any dead roots that are dark and shriveled or soft and mushy. Keep it in the same sized pot.

I have written article on Orchid care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].
