Beefsteak Begonia

Question
Hi Will, I'm just wondering about a Beefsteak Begonia. I would like to start another plant with a leaf from my plant. Is it best to use a large leaf or a smaller one? Also what is the best way to root a leaf ?

As always thanks for your help !!

Vicky

Answer
Hi Vicky,

The leaf size does not matter. Choose any healthy leaf that will not detract from the plant's appearance when it is removed.

Leave about 1-2 inches of leaf stem atached. Insert the stem into a small pot filled with a damp mix of equal parts peat moss and perlite. Keep the leaf itself just above the damp potting mix. Place the pot and cutting in a plastic bag with small vent holes. Keep it in a warm place where it gets lots of bright light that is indirect and protected from the direct rays of the sun. It usually takes about a month for roots to develop and small plantlets to emerge at the base of the leaf stem. When the plantlets are large enough to handle, they can be separated and put into their own small pots. The plastic is no longer necessary and the light can be gradually increased. Keep them potbound if you want them to flower.
