Repotting

Question
Can I repot my palm in a brass pot without some type of liner?

Answer
Hi Kim,

No. Having the soil and roots in direct contact with brass will cause the release of chemicals toxic to the plant. The mineral salts in the soil will also gradually corrode the brass pot from the inside out. The corrosion will be covered with soil, so you won't know it's going on until the brass pot springs a leak.

If you want to use the brass planter. I suggest you find a plant that is potted in a plastic nursery pot that fits inside the brass planter with a plastic saucer in the bottom. That will keep the soil and the metal separated from one another. You could also line the brass pot with polyvinyl, but there is a risk that it will tear and leak without your knowing it.
