draceana marginata

Question
I have had a dracena marginata in a self watering system for nearly two years. I live in a tropical country and the plant is placed next to a window where it gets plenty of light.

The leaves have been drooping and yellowing with brown tips. I discovered I have over-watered and have tried to pour the excess water out. It's drying out but the soil is still moist when I stick my finger in. Lately the leaves have started to curl.

Should I just let the plant dry out. I have not watered the plant for nearly 2 weeks.

Answer
Audrey,

For this very reason I do not recommend self watering pots for any plants. I recommend that you remove the Dracaena from that pot and put it in a clay pot. The sides breathe and the plant will dry out faster. You can replace some of the soggy soil with dry soil. If the stem has turned mushy the plant is not savable. Go find a new one and try again. This plant likes to be in a very sunny location. This time of year it can go outdoors in full sun even in hot temperatures. It likes to dry out between watering. It can be dry for several days before you water it and it will still be fine. Good luck.
