Mass Canes

Question
Hello Will,

I was looking to get a Mass Cane that would ultimately reach 5-6 feet tall. The ones that the local stores carry though are all about 2 feet tall with the cane cut. I was wondering if this stunts the canes growth or if more canes would come up anyway and it wouldn't be a problem. I saw your other response on the plant, and appreciate your advice.

Thanks

Derek

Answer
Hi Derek,

I am surprised that only short Dracaena massangeana canes are available in your area. You might ask if they can order a taller one for you, especially after you read my reply below.

The canes are actually cuttings taken as sections from 20+ foot trees in the tropical forests. These canes are cut into sections of different lengths - usually 2, 3, 4 and 5 feet. The canes have no leaves or stems initially and are rooted in small pots. Once the roots develop, then new shoots or stems with leaves (called heads) emerge from the top of the cut cane sections. The canes themselves never grow taller once they have been cut. And no new canes ever emerge from the soil.

So what you see is pretty much what you get. Of course, the thinner stems that grow from the top of each cane will continue to slowly grow taller. But it would take 3-4 years for a 2-foot plant to add another 3 to 4 feet of stem (not cane) height.

So if you want a taller Mass Cane, you will have to buy one that is already tall enough for you.

I have written an article on Corn Plant care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].
