QuestionMy husband and I were moving our quite large elephant foot plant outside for the summer and it toppled over, which snapped off the top foot of fronds. Will it continue to grow or is it too damaged? I've had it for thirty years and feel awful about it. Hope you have encouraging news. Thank you for your time and expertise. Shirley
AnswerShirley,
The top that broke off can probably be rooted and you will have a plant to give a friend or family member. Pick up some rooting hormone at a garden center and remove the leaves on the lower third of the cutting. Dip it in the rooting hormone. Make a hole in the soil in a fresh pot of soil and insert the cutting. On the original plant trim up the broken trunk and it will send out 2 or more side shoots which will grow into a new top. If it sends out more than 2 shoots pinch the others off. More than that will look strange. It will be fine. Good luck!
