AnswerRay,
Your mother's plant is a Philodendron Selloum. It is a tropical plant that lives on the jungle floor and gets bright light through the canopy. It needs a bright location where your hand will make a sharp shadow but it will not get the sun actually on it. It also is not a swamp plant. The yellow leaves appear that it may be getting too much water. Do not water it until the top 2 inches of soil is very dry. Too much water will rot the roots. If you pull it out of the pot and see nothing but roots it may need repotted into a pot with a diameter no more than 2 inches larger than the current pot. Do not go to a larger one or it will stay too wet too long. Any house plants should only be repotted between April 1st and June 30th when the roots are actively growing.
