QuestionMy agleonema is part of a large potted display and is so top heavy it is falling over the side of the pot. Can I cut it back?
AnswerHi Terry,
I am not sure I have the full picture here because I don't know why your Aglaonema is falling over the sides and I don't understand what you mean by "part of a large potted display." However, Aglaonemas not only can but should be pruned back when they become overgrown, leggy or floppy.
Cut the stems at any point with the knowledge that new foliage growth will emerge from a point on the stems just below the pruning cuts. It is usually better to prune back further than you think.
The pruned off top portions can be rooted in the base of the existing plant, in separate small pots or in water.
I have written an article on pruning that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
