Repotting yucca type plant

Question
You stated that you cut off the top part of the yucca plant and start a new plant with the top part. What procedure do you use to start a new plant with the top? Stick it in water? etc?

Answer
Sheila,

Thank you for your rating. I looked over the answer again and I noticed I said, "A few lower roots may brown before your cutting is rooted but just remove those carefully and the cutting will soon start growing." It should have said "A few lower leaves may brown before your cutting is rooted but just remove those carefully and the cutting will soon start growing." I wanted to make that correction so you don't get upset if a few lower leaves turn brown before it is fully rooted. Good luck!

Sheila,

No, dip the cut end in rooting hormone and insert it into a fresh pot of soil or in the soil beside the parent plant. Set it in a sunny location and treat it like a rooted plant. Do not water it unless it is dry.

Rooting any cuttings in water causes them to grow very succulent roots. When you move them to soil those roots rot very easily before they convert to wiry roots. Rooting in soil using rooting hormone grows wiry roots immediately and is much more successful.

A few lower roots may brown before your cutting is rooted but just remove those carefully and the cutting will soon start growing. At that point you know it is rooted.  Good luck!

Darlene
