Overgrown Norfolk Pine

Question
I rescued a Norfolk pine from an office, it has very long branches on one side and short on the other. It is doing fine here with new growth but is very lopsided.  This make it difficult to fine a place for it in my home. Is there  way to trim the long branches to even it up.

Answer
Hi Lyn,

You can trim back some of the longer branches, but that will make the tree look less full. I suggest you trim off as little as possible. Be careful not to prune off the top growing tip. Once that is removed or damaged, new growth will cease and the tree will very slowly start to die.

A Norfolk Pine that has grown lopsided is one that always had the same side facing the light source. Keep that in mind when you locate it in your home.

I have written an article on Norfolk Island Pine care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
