Scale

Question
BoP-c
BoP-c
Hi Will,

I have a lovely bird of paradise which has been invaded by what I suspect is some variety of scale.  Any help you might have on the type of scale/pest and control or elimination would be welcome!

THANKS,
TP

Answer
Hi Terry,

Thanks for the photos. That is soft scale on your Bird of Paradise. Mix a solution of 5 parts water, 1 part isopropyl alcohol and a squirt of liquid dish soap. Then, thoroughly drench-spray all leaf and stem surfaces, even ones that don't appear to have any visible scale. Because B of P has very large leaves and not too many of them, it is fairly easy to wipe down all the leaf surfaces with a soft rag or sponge with the alcohol solution. Do the same with the stems.

That will eradicate most of the visible scale insects. Unfortunately, these critters love to hide in the tiniest of nooks and crannies, specifically the small space where the leaf stems emerge from their sheaths. Try to pull the stems aways from the sheaths and spray the solution as deep down into them as you can.

If you are really thorough, you will get all of the scale. However, you have to assume you will miss a few down inside and they will reproduce and come back. So be watchful and spot spray again at the first sign of their return. If that does not work, then I recommend getting some silicon-based foliage cleaner called Brand X that has an unusual penetrating ability. It is available only through Southwest Plantscapes.
