Question
Pachira sap droplets
Hi Will--I saw your 3/16/2006 advice about sticky droplets on a Pachira plant. My Pachira, which I've had for 10 years, has started developing droplets on both sides of the leaves. It also has brown spots on a few leaves, and recently it dropped several clusters of leaves. I don't see any critters crawling around. Any suggestions? Thanks!
AnswerHi Chris,
Pachiras often produce sap droplets on both sides of leaves when they are grown in very bright light. It is not a cause for concern. However, you may want to consider reducing the light just a bit. The plant will grow a bit more slowly, but the leaves will be a darker green in color.
The brown patches are blemishes and are not a symptom of pests or disease. Reducing the light my also reduce the development of brown parches in the future.
The recent loss of leaves is unrelated to any of the above. It may be quite normal as the plant loses lower leaves as it adds new ones on top. If you are losing more than you are adding, then it may be a watering problem. Allow the top half-inch of soil to dry in between waterings.
