QuestionBS"D
Hello
I live in Hong Kong and would like to buy "holland cocus" form ikea. We have a high humidity but there are definitely days without sunlight. The plant would be on an open balcony. You can see half a coconut in the soil and the leaves r pointy, the plant between 2 to 3 feet.
Hope you can advise
Thank you
Laurian
AnswerHi Laurian,
I believe your mean Cocos or Coconut Palm. (Cocus is a hardwood tree used to make musical instruments.)
When grown outdoors, Cocos needs protection from direct sunlight. It should be grown under light shade. Direct sun will burn the leaves. The high humidity will definitely help. Allow the top 20% of the soil to dry in between thorough waterings. Watch for spider mites, which love to feed on this plant.
I have written an article on care of Palms that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
