QuestionQUESTION: my calla was out doors all summer and did very well but the stems were like rubber and bent over the blossoms didn't open all the way now its inside, its frost time here in vermont the leaves are turning yellow how do i winter the bulbs for next year?
ANSWER: Mary,
Clip the leaves of at the soil level. Let the plant dry out and put it, pot and all, in a brown paper bag. Set the bag in a cool closet or if you have an unheated attached garage that doe not get below 35 degrees it can go there. While it is in storage you can give it no more than 1/4th cup of water a month so the bulbs don't shrivel. Too much water will cause them to rot. Wait at least 3-5 months then start checking them weekly for signs of new sprout.
When you see sprouts they need to go in the sunniest location possible. Outside in full sun would be best. Full sun and fertilizer will make the plant stronger and give you shorter stems but you still may need to stake them. The bulbs need fertilizer such as Miracle Grow or any water soluable fertilizer on a weekly basis to feed the bulbs so they will grow larger and produce more flowers each year. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer box for weekly feedings. Good luck.

QUESTION: why did the stems get rubbery and the blossoms not open all the way
AnswerMary, When Calla lilies are not in enough sun the stems get extra long trying to reach for the sun and that causes them to get floppy.
No fertilizer causing the plant to be weak or too much heat, too much cold or not enough water can cause buds not to open.
