peacock jasmine

Question
what kind of soil do I need to transfer my new peacock jasmine from the 2 to 2 1/2" planter to a 4" planter (pot)?  How often do I change the size of pots to a bigger size?  How fast do they grow and to what heights?  I can't seem to find out these answers to these questions.  Please help me so I am successful with my new plants.  Thank You,  Karen

Answer
Karen,

You need a light weight soil, to acheive that you can use 2 parts of potting soil and 1 part perlite that you can buy anywhere that you buy potting soil. You need to move it to that 4 inch pot asap and make sure it has a drain hole in the bottom of the pot and a drain tray under it. Never leave it sittting in a tray full of water. Empty the tray an hour after every watering. This plant needs full sun. It would prefer to be outside in full sun. During the winter when you must keep it indoors it needs to be next to a south facing window with blinds and drapes open from dawn to dusk.

You will need to move it to a 6 inch pot in the spring but not before  April 1st. Then as soon as night temperatures are above 50 degrees it will need to go back outdoors in full sun. It will get up to 6 feet tall if it is planted in the ground. In a pot it will probably not get taller than 3-4 feet. Repot it once a year in April until it gets to a 10 inch pot then repot it every 2 years until it gets to a 12 to 14 inch pot. Then I would keep it in the same pot. It probably will not bloom until it is root bound. Most blooming plants will not bloom until it is rootbound.

You can read more info about your plant at this website: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/of-29.pdf

Good luck with your beautiful new plant.
