Question
Black leaf
Hello! I recently purchased a baby jade plant (Crassula argentea) from Wal-mart about a month ago. The pot that it was in seemed to be small for a growing plant, so I re-potted it into a terra cotta pot about 4'' in diameter. It sits on my windowsill and gets probably around 6-10 hours of light every day, and I only water it every week to 10 days. Before I purchased it, it was in the greenhouse section of Wal-mart. A few days ago I noticed that a leaf at the very bottom of the plant had turned a grey-black color. Have I been doing anything wrong? Is the plant sick? Thanks so much!!
AnswerHi Hannah,
A single dead leaf is not a cause for concern. If you suddenly get many more, then that would indicate some kind of problem, although not a specific one.
Although I would have advised against your decision to repot your new Jade Plant, at least you didn't move it into a much larger pot. I assume the new pot has a drainage hole. If it does not, then you will have to move the Jade to a small pot that does have a drain hole.
The light you described is good for a Jade. Water only when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry.
As long as you didn't damage the roots wen you repotted, used a pot with a drain hole, keep it in a sunny spot and water as I described, your Jade should be just fine, although a few leaves will occasionally discolor and die because that is normal.
I have written an article on Jade Plant care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at
