QuestionHi Will,
I live in the PacNW (zone 8b). This year for the first time local garden centers are carrying a few tropical plants namely, Crotons and Mandevilla. Bougainvillea grows outdoors here year round but I thought Crotons and Mandevilla were tropical plants exclusively for indoors in colder climates. I would like to plant a few of each for color in my sunny garden if they will withstand the winters in zone 8b. What do you think?
Thanks,
Emily
AnswerHi Emily,
You have a wonderful growing climate in BC. However, I am afraid you are out of luck as far as Crotons and Mandevilla go. Crotons cannot withstand temps below freezing (Zone 10) and Mandevilla the same except for a few species that tolerate -5 C. (Zone 9). If you get an unusually mild winter, the Mandevilla might make it, but it probably will not. Perhaps global warming will work in your favor!
