fica tree problem

Question
QUESTION: I have a problem with growing fica trees outdoors. The root systems  cracked concrete walkways and I am afraid that it will destroy foundations of the houses. Please advise.

thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Maryana

ANSWER: Maryana,

Yes, ficus benjamina can be rather invasive and destructive if grown close to concrete or buildings. I suggest that you cut it down and you may have to use Roundup on any sprouts that grow off the roots. Then if you really want a ficus you need to plant it at least 30 feet from concrete or buildings. If that is not possible you need to discuss with a nursery what trees you can use instead. They would be aware of your best options. Good luck!

QUESTION: Dear Darlene,
Thank you for your answer.
If I cut down the roots, from the side that damage concrete will it grow back?

Answer
Maryana,

You can try it but ficus are very agressive at growing roots which often swell. If you water the tree stop watering it, it can live with very little water and less water will slow down root growth. Often cutting off 1 root will make it grow 2 or 3 in place of it but if you don't water they will grow slower. You can keep chopping off roots growing under the side walk but you will have to be very vigilent. Good luck.
