lemon trees

Question
I also started a lemon tree from lemons that came from the grocery store. They are only two inches tall right now but they are real healthy. have 4 trees how do I keep them healthy?

Answer
Hi Rebecca,

Keep your seedlings tightly potted and in warm temps and direct indoor sunlight. Water them as soon as the surface of the soil is dry. Apply a standard fertilizer at half strength once per month.

When they need water every couple of days, then move them into pots one inch larger and repeat this again as needed (when they require water every couple of days).

When they are sturdy enough to withstand wind and rain, you can move them outside into light shade during the warmer months. Bring them inside when temps fall to 45 degrees F. at night.

Citrus trees tend to grow tall and without many branches unless they are pruned regularly. Pruning will encourage branching. You can start pruning off the top inch or two as soon as the plant is about a foot tall. The more often you prune, the more compact and full they will become.

Most seeds from store bought citrus fruits are sterile so you are unlikely to ever get flowers and fruit.
