QuestionHello Mr. Creed,
My question pertains to the spathiphyllum plant. I recently purchased one for my home and I am a little confused over the proper temperature for the plant. I live in a tropical region where it is very humid and the temperature can be overwhelming at times. I am worried that if I leave the spathiphyllum outside that it is to hot, even though it is not in direct sunlight, and if I leave it in the house the ac is to cold for it. I usually keep my ac set at ~73 degrees. I would like to leave it outside on the pool deck because it is a great addition to the surroundings but I don't want to kill it, what do you suggest?
AnswerHi Michael,
Spathiphyllum (Peace lilies) are tropical plants but they grow only in deep shade when outdoors. High humidity is fine but temps much over 90 degrees F. are not. In addition, Spaths have thin leaves that are easily shredded by wind and heavy rain. For all those reasons, I suggest that you keep your Spath indoors where the environment is more moderate. Unless the AC is blowing directly on it, the AC will not be a problem.
I have written an article on Peace Lily care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at
