QuestionI had a beautiful Dracaena Lemon Surprise that was given to me as a gift. It has 3 stems about 2 1/2 feet high. Almost all of the leaves have turned brown and died off. The few that are left already have brown in them. Can the plant be saved; and if so, how? I am not sure what I did to hurt it. It was first in a sunny location indoors (morning sun) and then I moved it to a sheltered deck that faces west. I live in Northern California. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
AnswerHi Marilyn,
If your Dracaena's growing tip is damaged, then your plant is not likely to recover. You can try cutting the stem off a few inches above the soil. If the roots and stem are still viable, then new growth will emerge just below the point where you make the cut.
Dracaenas are tropical species plants that do best when kept indoors. They like bright, but indirect sun the best. However, I suspect that cool outdoor temps may have been the primary cause of your plant's deterioration, although the strong outdoor sun may have also been a problem. You didn't mention your watering routine, so I cannot rule out improper watering as part of the problem.
