QuestionHi, I have a beautiful Hibiscus tree which we have had for 5 years. We bring it in the winter and take it out in the spring - we live in the suburbs of Philadelphia PA - when can I take this large plant outside? It is starting to take over my kitchen. Also, could this plant be planted in the ground in this part of PA? This plant is like I said large it is in large pot and stand approximately 5 feet tall. Thanks for the help!
AnswerCathy,
No, it will not survive temperatures under 40 degrees so you cannot plant it in the ground near Philadelphia. It prefers over 50 degrees. You can cut it back by as much at 2/3rds of the top of the tree. It is best to cut it back in the middle of winter when it stops blooming. But if it is huge now I would go ahead and cut it way back. Just keep the shape of the top like it was when you first bought it, probably ball shaped. It will postpone the blooming but it should still bloom this summer. It can go outside whenever the night temperatures are above 50 degrees. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
