QuestionHi Will,
I am familiar with Dracaena species, in that I know when a cane is rooted or cut, it will sprout one or more heads at the top of the cane, and that these heads can also be cut off and rooted.
My question is, will these heads remain leafy and just continue to grow, or will they eventually lose their leaves and become woody canes that sprout new heads? Is a rooted head a "baby" version of the original plant, or will it always be just a head?
Thanks very much,
Justin
AnswerHi Justin,
Interesting question. I assume you are referring specifically to Dracaena massangeana canes. Theoretically, the cutting can develop and become tall enough and old enough to develop a tall, cane structure. That is what happens in its native tropical areas.
However, that will not occur in your home and is difficult to do even in a greenhouse. The stem cuttings will grow very tall in your home, even reaching your ceiling, but will never develop the thick, woody stems that develop when they are grown in their native habitat.
I have written an article on Massangeana canes (Corn Plants) that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
