QuestionI have a beautiful stromanthe multicolor & it needs to be repot. My question is can I separate the plant and start a second pot and if so how because I have heard the the plant is very delicate.
AnswerHi Vikki,
I don't usually recommend dividing plants for two reason:
1) Putting multiple plants in a single pot is done intentionally because it makes for a fuller, more attractive plant than a single plant would by itself.
2) Dividing plants is very stressful for the plant and unless it is done just right, you risk losing both plants.
If you decide to do it, use a clean, long sharp knife to slice from the top of the rootball down between the two plants. When repotting the two halves, use a soil mix that is similar to the mix the plant is now potted in and use pots that are just barely large enough to fit the divisions into. Be careful with watering the divided plants, keeping in mind that the added soil will retain water longer than usual and the cut roots will absorb the water more slowly. Thus, there is a high risk of root rot.
