Mealy Bug Treatment for Golden Cane Palms

Question
Would you be so kind as to advise what is the best treatment for mealy bugs once they have infested Golden Cane Palms.  They are currently in pots under the patio, and I have many different sizes of these palms under cover (from small to large).  I live in Perth, Western Australia and the temperatures here at the moment is around 30 - 35 degrees.  I have sprayed them with Confidor, where I can see the mealy bugs, but this seems be killing the fronds. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Answer
Hi Kelly,

My area of expertise is limited to potted plants that are grown indoors as houseplants. In that environment, the best treatment is a thorough drenching of all leaf and stem surfaces with a solution of 5 parts water, 1 part isopropyl alcohol and a bit of liquid soap. The key is complete coverage otherwise you will miss many of the juveniles that are nearly invisible.

I would have some concerns about using any sprays at temps that high. That may be what is responsible for the damaged fronds.

I have written an article on indoor Palm care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
