Question
Desert Rose
My plant got root rot. There is no longer any roots left. I cut off most of the bottom portion of the plant that was soft and mushy. The plant does not have the swollen caudex, must have been grown from a cutting. I am wondering if I can pot what is left. Will it grow new roots? What is remaining is a long stalk about 2 inches in diameter. There are a few branches growing off of the stalk and about 3 inches long from the last branch to the end of the stalk. The cut end had some soft outer layers but is very firm and white. it has been 3 days since I cut the rotten ends off and it is starting to dry out. If it is possible to repot, what is the best process? Thank you for your help. I would really love to save this plant.
AnswerHi Yen,
As long as the stems are not dried out and are viable, then you should be able to propagate your Desert Rose from stem cuttings. Tip cuttings about 3 inches long are younger and somewhat easier to propagate than older, longer stem cuttings. You could cut off all of the discolored material from the main stem and try to propagate it, but that is riskier than taking smaller, shorter tip cuttings.
Whichever you choose, allow the cuttings to dry in the open air for about 24 hours, then insert the cutting(s) in a small pot filled with a damp, porous potting mix. Keep the potting mix damp but not wet. Excessive dryness or sogginess will easily damage tender roots as they emerge so monitoring the soil moisture carefully is the key to success. Providing good light and warm bottom temperatures will also help the rooting process.
BTW, the sap of Adenium is mildly toxic, so be careful when you are cutting and handling the stems.
