Spathiphyllum Fungus???

Question

Plant Disease
I have a spathyphyllum on my lanai.  I have noticed this white powdery substance along its internal stems.  When touched it releases a fine powder in the air.  There is nothing on the leaves.  Can you tell me what it is and what to do about it?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Terra,

It is hard to tell from the photo you posted, but it looks like there is a type of fungus, probably powdery mildew, on the lower stems. The source is probably the soil or bark chips in the soil combined with high humidity.

I suggest that you turn the plant upside down and shake out any loose soil or bark or dead stems from the surface. Use you hands to remove any that are stuck. Then spray the stems and surface of the soil with a solution of 5 parts water, 1 part rubbing alcohol and a squirt of liquid soap.

I suggest that you move your Spathiphyllum inside where it will be less exposed to outdoor fungi and high humidity. Fungus problems are quite rare on Peace Lilies that are kept indoors.

I have written an article on Peace Lilies that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
