what kind of soil should i use for my cacti and when should i water it?

Question
QUESTION: I have a ruby red moon cactus that is about 5" tall and I'm not sure what kind of soil I should use. Because my last cactus ended up rotting at the bottom and it was a 1" rainbow cactus but I think it was because of the water issue. someone told me to use sandy soil.

ANSWER: Mimi,

Cacti are desert plants, they require porous cactus soil with good drainage in a pot with a drainage hole and a drain tray under it. Prefers bright light or a minimum of medium light with ample airflow. A large north windowsill or near an east or west window with the shades or drapes open all day. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. empty the drain tray after watering. Protect from frost. Grafted cacti which this is are frequently not long lived. Fungal and/or bacterial infections attack them. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.

QUESTION: how do i know when my cactus has an infection. and what kind of cactus lives for a long time?

Answer
Mimi,

If it gets black spot it is an infection. If you see that immediately start spraying with Lysol spray lightly keeping the can at least 12 inches from the plant. Spray it every other day for at least 2 weeks or until you feel the cactus is healing and growing. Or you can go to a garden center and ask what they recommend for a fugal or bacterial infection on a cactus. I have used Lysol successfully and I feel it is safe indoors.

Most cacti that are not grafted are long lived. Many of them bloom if they are given enough sun. Living stones aka Lithops is a very interesting succulent plant that blooms. I have a dish of them that I grew from seed 15 years or more ago. I have a lot of interesting cacti and succulents but none are grafted. I avoid those. If you live anywhere near Fort Wayne, IN. I would be happy to show you my cacti and succulents an give you cuttings of at least 10 cacti and succulents.  The following websites should help you:

All cacti and succulents require a course sandy cactus soil. You can mix houseplant soil with equal amounts of play sand that you can get at Lowes or Home Depot. Good luck.
