Massangeana Cane plant leaves

Question

Massangeana Cane Plant
I recently purchased a Massangeana Cane plant. When I brought it home the leaves had begun to turn brown. I watered the plant as it was dry, but the leaves are continuing to turn brown. Is there anyway to save my plant?! I have it inside located by my front door. It receives minimal light and I do not water it very often as I have read that they do not like to be kept very wet. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Kristen,

If the leaves started to discolor as soon as you got your plant home, then the cause is something that the retailer did. I say that because plants do not react immediately to improper care. I suspect that the retailer had neglected watering it for a while and the plant just coincidentally started to react to that drought just after you purchased it. You certainly have good reason to return the plant for an exchange or credit. Or you can trim off the discolored leaves and it will probably be okay in the future, if you follow my instructions below.

When soil gets very dry, it becomes hard like a dried sponge and is difficult to re-wet. Therefore, you should let the pot sit in a saucer filled with water for 3 or 4 hours. The soil will wick up the water and become saturated. After that, empty the saucer and do not add any water until the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Then, water slowly from the top until a small amount of water trickles trough the drainage holes.

Massangeana Canes do best in bright indirect light. That means it should be within a few feet of a nearby window that is uncovered throughout the day. If it is in a corner or more than 5 or 6 feet from a window, then it will not receive enough light. On the other hand, I do not recommend moving it outside in the warm weather because the outdoor sun is too strong.

Do not be tempted to repot this plant. If you don't like the plastic pot, then get a pot that you like that is just large enough for you to set the plastic pot inside.

I have written an article on Corn Plant care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].
