Dying Jade Plant

Question

Dying Jade
My Jade plant has been slowly dying for over 6 months now.  The leaves are drying out and falling off.  The slowly turn black and sparkly looking  (as though they were dipped in sugar).  Very weird.  I've tried various levels of water but the plant has always been on my desk with a fair amount of natural light through the windows.  I can provide more pictures if that will help.  This also seems to have killed some of the sprouting base trunks

Answer
Hi Jerry,

It looks like your Jade is not getting enough light and enough water. The long spaces between leaves and the small size of newer leaves definitely suggest inadequate light. Jades do best right on a sunny windowsill. More than a few feet away is not good.

Lack of water is causing the shriveled leaves and the crystals are the remains of the once-waxy coating on healthy leaves. Of course, not watering often enough is an obvious cause of dehydration. However, if you keep the soil constantly moist, then the roots will rot and will no longer be able to absorb water for the rest of the plant. This occurs most often in Jades that are in pots that are too large. If properly potted, you should water your Jade thoroughly when the top third of the soil is dry.

I have written an article on Jade care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].
