It is best to prune vining plants, including Golden Pothos, before it looks obvious that they need pruning. Delaying pruning often means the vines lose older leaves near the top. Those leaves never grow back so you end up with long bare strings.
Any Pothos vine or stem can be pruned at any point along the stem. New growth will emerge from the node (a bump on the vine where the leaf stem attaches to the vine) just above where you make the pruning cut. That means you get to decide where the new growth will emerge.
If the upper portion of a vine has lost many leaves, then it is best to prune that vine back to within a few inches of the soil so as to get rid of the bare section of the vine.
If there has not been any leaf loss and you simply want to keep the Pothos from becoming longer, then prune back random vines by 6-12 inches at two week intervals.
Always prune just below a node so that you don't leave an unsightly stub below the node.
