jasmine roots in a glass plantpot

Question
Hi,
I have just recently bought a jasmine plant and re-potted it into a glass jar. I think this looks brilliant, but I am worried about the roots' reaction to being exposed to light will be a negative one. How well can plants like the jasmine live and grow in a glass jar with it's roots exposed to light?

Thanks,
Jack

Answer
Hi Jack,

There are several problems with using glass planters. The number one problem is that there is no way for excess water and accumulated mineral salts and gases to drain out though the bottom. This problem exists with any planter that has a sealed bottom. With the glass at least you will be able to see if water has accumulated in the bottom. However, the problem of excess mineral salts and gases remains.

Another problem is that eventually algae will build up along the inside walls of the glass. This is a problem only to the extent that it alters the appearance of the planter and may prevent you from seeing if water is accumulating.

Although roots are not normally exposed to sunlight, that is probably the least of your concerns. The build up of algae in the presence of light will help reduce the light exposure to the roots.

None of these are problems that will affect your Jasmine in the near future, assuming you are careful about monitoring the water level in the soil. However, over the course of a year or more these problem will probably start to affect your plant adversely.
