Plant scale insect

Question

my plant
Hi,
I have 3 plant's (I believe they are anglaonema) that are becoming sticky and sappy. I find it on top and bottoms of leaves, trunks and alot on the flowering parts. I am also noticing some brown bumps along the trunks that look to me like just part of the plant. Question is... are these possibly armoured scale? The plants are looking a little less perky of late too. Is their a way to be sure? Like maybe scrape one off and inspect? Also what are effective treatment options for scales if this is indeed what they are? Photos follow (of the one I repotted today)..thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Kathleen,

What I see on the stems in the photo is not scale. However, the stickiness you describe may be scale. Scale insects are translucent, nearly invisible, slightly raised bumps about the size of a match head. As they mature, they develop a dark, hard outer shell that makes them more visible, not unlike a slightly raised mole on human skin. They scatch off easily with a fingernail.

To treat scale insects, mix a solution of 5 parts water with 1 part rubbing alcohol and a squirt of liquid soap. Then spray ALL leaf and stems surfaces until they are dripping wet. This is a messy project, but thoroughness of coverage is critical to effectiveness.

I have written an article on treating indoor plants pests that I will e-mail to you or anyone else who sends a request to me at [email protected].
