Question
aechmea primera and 2
Hi, I've had this aechmea primera for a little over 6 months or so. I bought it from our local grocery store already blooming. It's been a great plant and nobody believes it's real it's so pretty. Anyway, a few months ago 2 pups popped up on either side of the mother. The mother is 15 inches tall, in an inside pot with a diameter of 10in and hgt-9in. The mother has started dying off of course but still holds a little pink to her flower. Both pups just reach 4 inches. Am I at the point of separating them from the mother? If so how do you go about doing that exactly? If not, where do I go from here? I've never had this type of plant before but so far so good! thank you
by the way I live in west/central TX if that matters with an indoor plant.
AnswerHi Tiffany,
You have done a great job with your Silver Vase bromeliad! I suggest waiting until the offsets or 'pups' are about one-half the height of the mother plant before trying separation. When you separate, try to take a bit of root with each pup so there will be something to help sustain them when they are moved to their own small 3 or 4 inch pots filled with a loose porous potting mix.
As an alternative, you can simply leave the offsets as is. The mother plant will continue to slowly die, but that will not deter the offsets from continuing to grow and flourish right in the same pot. Your pot is quite large so there is plenty of room for multiple plaints. This alternative is easier because you simply continue to do what you have been doing for the past 6 months.
I have written an article on Bromeliad care that I will e-mail to you or anyone else who sends a request to me at
