Question

plant leaf
I need help i moved into an apartment it came with a big plant that was over grown and drying out since we moved in and started taking care of it it has responded really well it has many new shoots i think 5 that r just getting ready to open up. it has i think 8 parts that look like different bulbs. I'm trying to find out what kind of plant it is and if i can separate them out so i can thin it out some.

Answer
Dave,

It is a philodendron selloum. It is not a bulb plant. Unless there are obviously 2 separate crowns where the leaves grow out of one central point it is all one plant. The larger the pot you put it in the larger it will get and this plant can get huge, outside in the ground in a tropical area it can get 12 foot tall or more. If you do not want the plant to get larger do not put it into a larger pot. If you see that it has 2 or more crowns in the pot it is feasible to separate them but it will be difficult. I would recommend that you wait till it is warm enough to take the plant outside and remove as much soil as possible by hand then literally wash the remaining soil off with a hose and then just slowly work at untangling the roots as carefully as possible without damaging them any more than necessary. I had one of these years ago and gave it away because it was getting too large for me. They do have miniature ones now days available at some nurseries. Good luck.
