QuestionSimple question: Can phalaenopsis orchids be planted in african violet soil? People say the mixes are very different from ordinary potting soil, but similar to each other. What do you say?
AnswerHi Tamika,
No, Phalaenopsis should most definitely NOT be potted in AV potting soil.
Orchid potting mixes are composed of very porous material, such as bark chips or sphagnum moss. In nature, Phalaenopsis Orchids grow attached to tree limbs in the rain forest. The roots attach themselves to the outside of the bark and receive water from daily rains. The roots must have air circulating around them at all times. That is why Orchid mixes are very porous.
Like most indoor plant species, AV's are potted in a soil-less potting mix that is primarily peat moss. Peat moss should not be confused with sphagnum moss. Peat moss is a highly decomposed form of sphagnum moss and has a consistency more like soil then sphagnum moss. Peat moss retains water very well, but it is not as porous as sphagnum moss or bark chips. That is why you should not use AV potting mix for your Orchid.
