QuestionI recently bought this plant for my boyfriend and keep it indoors, keeping the soil moist ( watering approximate. Every three days). I am having some trouble finding care instructions for the plant, and it has started dropping leaves, both brown dead ones and green ones. Any advice? We live in the bay area, so a fairly steady climate.
AnswerHi Emily,
This is an unusual Ficus species (Ficus burtt-davyi) that comes from southern South Africa. It is used primarily as a bonsai, which I assume yours is. It is best kept on a sunny window sill or at least within a few feet of a sunny window. Good light is absolutely essential.
Allow the surface of the soil to dry before watering it thoroughly. If it gets too dry, it may go into a temporary dormancy and shed some or all of its leaves. It will recover, but it is best to avoid allowing it to become too dry. On the other hand, you should not keep the soil constantly soggy or the roots will rot and the plant will no recover from that.
Fertilize it at half-strength no more than monthly. High humidity is not necessary. Regular pruning is a must for bonsais that are intended to stay at their present size and in their existing pots indefinitely.
